PuppetLOVE!
A Festival of Radical Puppetry

PuppetLOVE! A Festival of Radical Puppetry is a gathering point for West Coast contemporary, emerging and radical puppetry. Originally produced by Wise Fool on a small scale in 1997 and 1998, PuppetLOVE! is now co-produced by and presented at Cellspace and includes a wide array of performances, a gallery exhibition, workshops, movies and more. PuppetLOVE! seeks to nurture the development of new forms and traditions in puppetry and to bring together puppeteers and puppet theatre that challenges the popular perception of puppets as an antiquated or irrelevant art form.

Worldwide and through the ages, puppetry has been used as a way for artists to safely make social commentary; to laugh at the leaders and to express what the rest of the world thinks but doesn't dare say aloud. Puppets give themselves permission to be outrageous, poetic, crude, absurd and bizarre.

There is currently a huge revitalization of puppetry, celebration arts and circus arts in the United States. As younger artists become disillusioned with the cultural bankruptcy of television and corporate media they dig into the roots of popular culture seeking to reclaim and revamp the magic and color of these ancient folk forms. Throughout the Midwest and all along the East Coast small puppet festivals, "puppet slams," and home-grown puppet movie festivals are popping up. PuppetLOVE! is the first West Coast expression of this movement.
